“The great growling engine of change is technology.”
These are the words of a very famous American writer and businessman, Alvin Toffler. And as scared as we are of technology, it has some great benefits for our children. It’s only the ‘change’ that we’re afraid to adapt. As parents, we sometimes dislike technology taking over every aspect of our lives, and yet we can’t seem to be able to live without it.
Technology is pragmatic and useful for all our future generations. Instead of running away from it, it’s better to embrace it. Here are a few positive effects of technology on our kids.
- Educational Entertainment
Can there be a better situation than education and entertainment coming together?
It’s a dream for every parent because kids are naughty little beings who get easily distracted from anything and everything. That half an hour drive or that one hour flight can now become an excuse to teach children from the plethora of educational learning apps and websites available. Be it science or mathematics or history, all of it can be downloaded in fascinating video formats which help in better understanding for the child as well.
- Broadened Horizons
Technology allows children to get a wide variety of experiences, socially and culturally. They know what is happening in which part of the world. So much so, that videos and live broadcasting of festivals and events has almost become equivalent to attending them virtually. This helps children to widen their minds and become accepting of cultural differences. For example, Swedish national Greta Thunberg successfully mobilised children all over the world to take part in a climate strike rally.
- Future is Technology
There is no denying that the future is only about technology. Introducing children to it at an appropriate age allows them to explore and understand it well. There are many online avenues that help in laying the foundation for their respective interests like Khan Academy is known for its Math based questions or Code Avengers and Code Academy for teaching the basics of coding to children. These also promote cognitive growth in children.
- Improved Eye-Hand Coordination
When children learn to use technology by themselves, there’s a significant development that improves, i.e. the eye-hand coordination. The movement of objects on a screen helps in the eye following movements. This, later on, translates into better reading and writing movements in school as the child is already familiar with moving hands and eyes as a form of communication and understanding.
- Enhanced Language Skills
Technology is capable of refining a child’s language skills because whatever game/video they play or watch, comes with its own set of instructions. E-books are another great option that helps in improving phonetics in children because they practice listening and speaking simultaneously. Kids these days are anyways very well equipped to teach technology to parents instead of the other way around.
- Swift Decision-Making Skills
If kids play games online, it requires planning and strategy to win. They decide the course of action of their steps, manoeuvres, circuits etc. Such behaviour online elevates their decision-making skills in real life too. Kids who play online make faster decisions in essential and critical incidents of their lives.
- Develop Natural Skills
Children can hone their natural talents with the help of technology. Whether it’s playing the guitar, strong analytical skills, drawing, coding, cooking, fun projects, DIYs etc. Any skills possessed by a child can be groomed further with the help of all the online avenues available.
The previous generations grew up with different forms of technology. We moved from radio to TV to Web-hosting etc. Technology has been a part of our lives too and if can make more successful beings out of our little ones, why not encourage the constructive use of it?
